Lip Filler Aftercare

Good Lip filler aftercare is simple. A cold compress, stay hydrated, keep pressure off your lips, and skip strenuous exercise and heat for the first 24 to 48 hours. Most people watch the swelling and bruising settle within a few days, and the final shape of your lips shows once the filler settles in. That said, the exact aftercare instructions you follow should come from your own injector, because every treatment is a little different.

At Salt Aesthetics in Bend, we walk every lip filler client through their own aftercare process before they leave, and we are always a phone call away if something feels off.

This guide is educational. It is not a substitute for the specific guidance your provider gives you, and it is not medical advice.

What is the lip filler healing process like?

Most lip filler is made with hyaluronic acid, a gel that adds volume and softens the shape of your lips. After your lip filler injections, expect some swelling, redness, and tenderness right away. A little bruising at the injection site is common too.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, Swelling usually goes away after 24 to 48 hours, but it may take up to a week. So if your lips look bigger than expected on day one, take a breath. That is the swelling, not the final result.

The healing process tends to follow a loose rhythm. Days one and two: peak swelling, maybe a bruise, lips feel firm. Days three to five: swelling eases, and any lumps from the dermal filler start to soften. Days seven to fourteen: the filler settles and you see your true shape. Be patient. Your lips are still finding their footing.

What should you do after getting lip fillers?

The most helpful thing you can do after a lip filler procedure is keep swelling down and leave your lips alone while they heal. A cold compress, or an ice pack wrapped in a soft cloth, is your best friend that first day or two. The Cleveland Clinic advises, Apply an ice pack for up to 10 minutes to reduce inflammation, pain and swelling. Do this several times during the first 24 to 48 hours, not all at once.

A few more aftercare tips that genuinely help:

  • Stay hydrated. Drinking plenty of water supports the healing process.

  • Keep your head elevated, especially that first night, to limit swelling.

  • Some people reach for arnica to help with bruising. Ask your provider first.

  • Sleep on your back if you can, so you are not putting pressure on the lips.

Will you need to massage your lips? Sometimes. If you feel a small lump, your injector may show you how to gently massage the area. Do not start pressing on your own without checking in first.

What should you avoid after lip filler?

For the first 24 to 48 hours, avoid anything that spikes your heart rate or body heat, and keep your hands off your new lips. So: no strenuous exercise, no sauna, and no introducing bacteria to the injection sites. Galderma, the maker of Restylane, puts it plainly for its lip filler: Minimize strenuous exercise and exposure to excessive heat, sun, or UV lamps for the first 24 hours after treatment.

Here is a short avoid list to protect your lips and your results:

  • No lip makeup or lip balm for at least 24 hours, to avoid introducing bacteria to the injection sites.

  • Skip the straw. Straws, smoking, even big kisses all put pressure on the lips.

  • Go easy on alcohol. Alcohol can also thin the blood and worsen bruising and swelling.

  • Avoid high temperatures: hot yoga, the sauna, sunbeds, and long sun exposure.

  • Be careful with blood-thinning medications like aspirin or ibuprofen unless your provider clears them.

None of this lasts forever. We are talking about a day or two of small adjustments.

How do you reduce bruising and swelling after fillers?

To reduce bruising and swelling, ice on and off, keep your head up, drink your water, and avoid blood thinners and alcohol for a couple of days. Galderma also recommends you use a cold compresses to reduce swelling. Most swelling and bruising fades within a few days. A little redness can linger longer, and that is normal.

And if you accidentally slept on your side after filler? It happens, and it is usually fine. One night will not undo your results. Just keep pressure off the lips going forward.

What are the risks of lip fillers, and when should you call?

Serious complications are rare. Still, lip filler is a medical treatment, so the signs are worth knowing. Common, expected effects include swelling, bruising, tenderness, and small lumps that soften over a week or two. Less common issues include infection or a cold sore.

The rare but serious one is vascular occlusion, where filler affects a blood vessel. Call your provider right away if you notice severe or worsening pain, skin that turns white (blanching), unusual discoloration, or any change in vision. These are not things to wait out at home. When in doubt, follow up with your injector. That is exactly what we are here for.

Results vary from person to person. How long your results last depends on the filler used, your body, and how well you care for your lips. Lip filler is not permanent, and these are educational notes, not promises about your outcome.

Frequently asked questions

How long does swelling last after lip fillers?

Most swelling peaks in the first day, then eases over 24 to 48 hours. Some swelling and bruising can linger up to a week, which is normal. The filler typically settles into its final shape within about two weeks. If swelling worsens after a few days instead of improving, call your provider.

Can I eat after lip filler injections?

Yes, you can eat after lip filler, though you may want soft foods at first while your lips feel tender. Try to avoid very hot foods that make you press hard on your lips. Keeping your lips clean helps lower infection risk. Skip the straw for the first 24 hours.

Can I wear makeup after lip fillers?

It is best to wait at least 24 hours before applying lip makeup or lip balm. Fresh injection sites are tiny openings, and makeup can introduce bacteria. After that first day, a clean SPF lip balm is a nice way to protect your lips. As always, follow your own provider's timeline.

When can I exercise after lip filler treatment?

Most providers suggest waiting at least 24 hours before strenuous exercise. Raising your heart rate and body temperature too soon can increase swelling and bruising. Gentle walking is usually fine, but save intense workouts and hot yoga for a day or two later. When in doubt, ask your injector.
